What it does for you
Look around the average American home today and you will probably find several electrical and electronic systems in charge of how we interact with our living space. One system controls heating and cooling, another system (usually individual switches or dimmers) controls lighting, another for security, and perhaps several different systems are involved for audio/visual entertainment. Each of these requires our input in order to serve our needs.

Some encounters are better than others. Consider the new breed of "programmable" system interfaces. As microprocessor technology becomes cheaper, more and more of these devices find their way into our home systems. The intent is to give us added value, but frequently the result is we choose to ignore the elaborate functionality and operate the system in its most basic mode. Rather than conquer yet another user interface, we just set it to autopilot and hope for the best. Sometimes there isn't enough functionality. Most A/V components come with their own remot, again with a zillion. Despite having all those buttons, you still end up having to pick up 2 or 3 remotes just to watch TV. Some remotes are supposed to learn the functions of the other remotes, but they are usually miles from slick. In the end we just learn to tolerate the clunky interface or 5 remotes cluttering up the end table.

With Control of your home systems everything changes. The "Vacation" button adjusts your thermostat, arms your security system, randomly turns lights on and off in the evening to simulate occupancy, even turns on the TV during common viewing hours. Push the "Play" button for the DVD and your AV components spring to life, the lights dim, curtains close, and the room temperature adjusts to movie-night cozy. As you're pulling into your driveway you press the garage door opener and the outdoor lights come on, indoor lights come on, and the whole house music system starts a play-list of your favorite songs to welcome you home. Just a few examples, but you get the idea. Your home, under your Control.
